My electroacoustic piece Junglow Drift was played last week at the Canadian Radio CJLO. They have a program called Runny Noise for experimental music from Post-Punk to Noise to Krautrock, etc. Junglow Drift(listen here) SoundArt , Electroacoustic, Field Recording, Sampling, Drone, Grain, Soundscape,Ambient Duration 1:32 min Recordings: Digital Recorder, Condenser Microphone, Contact Microphones, VLF, Hydrophone. Description Acousmatic presence of beings that seem to inhabit only at the environmental sound matter. Sonic investigation of an environment's Eco-system in constant drift and approximation, saturation and distancing. Low drones that travel unimaginable distances through a network of trees. High pitched sounds zenning by so fast that the eye fails in identifying their presence. This sound piece was conceived by sampling and processing of field recordings during a trip to the Amazon Forest in Brazil (Rio Mamori).
Listen to Runny Noise every wednesday 1 am at CJLO
New Release! So the couple of months in Rio did me some good! After the PD workshop, we decided to continue the project forming the improvisation project called PD Objects. The objective is to continue exploring the signal processing through instruments together with objects and circuitry exploration as well for controllers. Here are some posters of our presentation in December and January.
Go to Download page and test the mini-embeded audioplayer from Fairtilizer, a collaborative platform for netlabel and musicians. I already had a user there with AzucrinaRecords but this is the first time I use it to upload and embed tracks. Before we were using Soundcloud.
All this delays in posting have everything to do with the fact that I am living in Rio de Janeiro now during November and December. I'm taking a PD course here at Plano B. So i will make post regarding the whole month I've been here already.
Well about being here, it's interesting to have packed only the clothes i will wear, the computer and gadgets i will use and things i have to work with. Also remembering the fact the first week I came my computer collapsed with the heat after being on for 3 days. Now new computer, new hard drive, new routine is doing good.
PLANO B (Plan B)
I guess most of my stay in Rio has to do with this place. It's at first look, a record store like the ones we see in indie movies. Experimental music vynil records, from swedish industrial bands to Brazilians deepest weird country secrets, from fleetwood mac to african djembe drums. Well, thats just the way it looks during the day, during the afternoons and weekends, they re-arrange the records and tables and have workshops and courses that go from circuit bending and arduino to PD, the one I am taking now. Also, at night, when the traditional neighbourhood of Lapa becomes alive of samba, there in a little alley, all kinds of music and noise sessions are jammed and presented.
The PD course at Plano B, with the cat that lives in the store also receiving messages!
From south african dj-vj scracth sets, to australian field recording artists (like Lawrence English), from brazilian experimental musicians and installation artists like Chelpa Ferro, to improvisation and free jazz with local and russian musicians, all kinds of sessions take place at Plano B, for the last, say 8 years at least? And still, after all this time (now remember the record store from the movies?), it's a cozy, community, autonomous, free-event place. You don't pay to get in, you get a cheap beer from the small bar (which is also the mixing-recording control station!), talk with the father, mother, daughter and cat that own the place that are always around, sit on the floor and enjoy the presentations, or stand up outside on the streets where there are so many people just chilling and talking. People of all ages enjoying the sound and the hang out, whering flip flops and high heels and listening to music which is not loud like a club but loud like a nice house party. That's one thing about Rio I find interesting, someplaces just feel so honest and relaxed. It's just so hot here that nothing can be cool. Except the air conditioning super-places, well, those conditioning places and clubs, I just don't feel like being there now...
Check out the humming bird that flew through the door durgin Chelpa Ferro's presentation last week! The little bird kept flying around the ceiling. Was it desoriented by the music or happy to find some extreme frequencies?
(Sound and Music Computer Conference Concert Reviews) This project was to me a smart sarcasm and yet, a very cool way to think of "live". In the middle of so many academic and virtuous concerts, there was still some space for those who are thinking some simple philosophy and usage of internet tools. Let's understand the name of the project by it's parts: "the freesounders" relates to The Freesound Project, which is a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sound samples uploaded by users. By using some features of the Freesound Project such as search results, preview and loop sound, the performer is capable of playing the website's search results as if it was a sampling-loop program. So "lap top band" refers to the performer choosing the TAGS in freesounds.org that will define the "concepts" and sound pool he will use in his composition. This different way to exploit the website can be thought of as a collaborative work in which the performer decides the structure and the Freesound community provides the content. Copyright? No problems with that. Being the sound samples free to download and available under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus License, the performer must state every author of every file used in the performance: this is accomplished as long as the computer screen is videoprojected at the back of the performer and every sound preview already includes the name of the author.
